More about oral medications

  • METFORMIN is a commonly prescribed medication for the management of type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the class of drugs called biguanides and works by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing the production of glucose in the liver. While the primary purpose of metformin is to control blood sugar levels, it can also have benefits for weight loss. Metformin has been found to contribute to modest weight loss in individuals with diabetes, primarily through its effects on reducing appetite and promoting a feeling of fullness. Additionally, metformin may help regulate hormonal imbalances associated with weight gain, such as insulin resistance or those who experience weight gain as a result of certain medications or medical conditions

  • CONTRAVE (buproprion-naltrexone) is a newer but effective prescription medication designed to address multiple aspects of weight management. Bupropion, an antidepressant and smoking cessation aid, targets the brain's reward center, helping to reduce cravings and promote a sense of fullness. Meanwhile, naltrexone, originally used for addiction treatment, counters the addictive nature of food by blocking certain receptors. Together, these components assist in appetite control, healthier food choices, and increased energy expenditure.

  • PHENTERMINE and QSYMIA (phentermine-topiramate) are prescription medications that are commonly used for weight loss management. They work by suppressing appetite through their effects on the central nervous system. By stimulating the release of certain neurotransmitters, such as norepinephrine and/or dopamine, these medications help reduce hunger signals, making it easier for individuals to control their food intake. They can be an important tool for individuals who are struggling with obesity or overweight conditions, as they aid in jump-starting weight loss efforts and providing initial motivation.
